Danny was brought in at the start of the 2002/03 season on a Bosman free transfer from Grimsby Town and went on to become a near ever-present in the team for the following two seasons and a popular figure around the club and with the supporters.
A highly rated player in his younger years, he broke through the youth ranks at Blundell Park and was a regular performer at Championship level when still a teenager.
There was plenty of speculation that a number of big clubs were ready to swoop for him during those days, as he helped the Mariners to constantly punch above their weight in the top flight of the Football League.
When his contract in Cleethorpes expired in 2002, there was no shortage of interest in Danny but he chose Palace and has gone on to become a real fans' favourite at Selhurst Park thanks to his consistent quality.
His versatility is one of his major strengths as he can play as a right sided full-back, winger or even in central midfield. He is a hard-working player who always gives it his all and his passing, crossing and non-stop running are real features of his game, along with his ability to start attacking moves from deep.
After hardly missing a game in two years and helping the Eagles to the Premiership, Danny was devastated when he picked up an injury in a pre-season friendly at Ipswich Town in 2004. That knock kept Danny out of action until October and it was not until Christmas that he played his first Premiership game of the season.
With his quality deliveries from wide positions and a ferocious shot, Danny's availability at any time is a great boost for the club and he will be hoping to help Palace back to the Premiership in order to make more of an impression next time.
Both renowned dressing room joker Danny and Matt Lawrence have been competing for the right back slot, but the latter's utilisation as a centre back under Neil Warnock has given Butts more first team chances in 2007/08.
