Bobby Kellard

Clubs: Southend United, Crystal Palace, Ipswich Town, Portsmouth, Bristol City, Leicester City, Crystal Palace, Hereford United, Torquay United

Bobby Kellard first joined the staff at Selhurst Park as a 20-year-old just after the beginning of the 1963/64 season. Palace manager Dick Graham wanted him for the tireless and industrious midfield performances for which he had won acclaim at Southend United.

Standing at only 5ft 6ins tall Bobby was important to the club's successful drive to promotion in the spring of 1964 and he continued as a valued member of the squad until November 1965 when he moved to Ipswich Town for £16,000. However, Bobby's most significant contribution to Crystal Palace still lay ahead.

It was late in September 1971 that he was recalled to Selhurst Park when Bert Head signed him from fellow First Division strugglers Leicester City for £50,000. Bobby's task was to replace popular Palace skipper Steve Kember, who had just left for Chelsea. His industry and skill were amply demonstrated again and palace fought their war slowly but surely out of trouble. The best indication of Bobby's part in this was that he not only successfully succeeded the highly rated Kember but also, very quickly, as skipper of the Palace team.

Palace recouped £12,000 of their investment in Bobby when he bustled off to join Portsmouth just after Christmas 1972 and he left the club having fulfilled, in the most testing of circumstances, all the hopes that had been pinned upon him by Palace management, staff and fans.
