Nigel came to prominence at Bristol Rovers and he became the country's first £1m goalkeeper when he moved to Palace in November 1989. Strong and powerful at 6ft 2inches, but possessing an ideal temperament as well as considerable presence, Nigel soon impressed Palace fans with his performances of distinction at the highest level.

In 1990/91 Nigel was a part of the Eagles' best ever defence and was on the verge of gaining full international recognition. After earning a series of B caps, he finally attained full international honours in Moscow on 29th April 1992, coming on as a substitute in a friendly against the newly formed Confederation of Independent States. During his career Nigel would go on to win 23 England caps.

Nigel was an ever present in Palace's First Division championship winning side of 1993/94 and he completed a run of 100 consecutive league games against Leicester City on at the end of October 1994.

In 1996 Nigel left Palace for Leeds United in a deal worth £2.25m and went on to play in the Champions League semi-final for his new club. In 2003 Nigel moved to Everton where he continues to put in match winning performances.
