It was from Dulwich Hamlet that Steve Coppell initially recruited the big, strong midfield man or striker in November 1984 and Andy immediately responded by netting a goal on his first full appearance against Grimsby Town. Andy featured largely as a striker in his early days at Selhurst Park and he was Palace's top scorer in 1985/86, but it was in midfield that his career really blossomed.

In the top-flight Andy's powerful and creative displays helped Palace to the 1990 FA Cup final, a club best finish of third in the league and the Full Members Cup in April 1991. In the company of Geoff Thomas, Palace's midfield at the time was one of the most respected in the country and, on its day, at least the equal of any other - as our FA Cup semi-final victory over Liverpool amply demonstrated. Andy was rewarded with an international cap in November 1991 against Poland in a crucial European Championship qualifier and it was a surprise to many that he never again represented his country.

After leaving Palace for a second time in 1992 the England international went on to play for a number of clubs in England and abroad including Tottenham Hotpsur and Millwall.
