Palace were somewhat unfortunate to finish on the losing side at Selhurst Park on Saturday, when Sheffield Wednesday took advantage of two defensive lapses to take three points back to south Yorkshire and keep their recent unbeaten run to seven games.
Clinton Morrison's 11th goal of the season brought Palace back level but with the Eagles then looking to press on in search of the win, Wednesday managed to break and steal a win on the club's Family Day, sponsored by Croydon Council.
Peter Taylor's side had certainly had the better of the possession throughout the game and were unfortunate to not be in front, with former Palace loanee Iain Turner keeping Wednesday level on numerous occasions in the first half.
For instance, Palace had a great chance to open the scoring after nine minutes, when the returning Jobi McAnuff beat Lee Bullen with a skilful turn before delivering a great cross to the far post with his left foot. James Scowcroft was there and looked favourite to score but he guided his header narrowly wide of the post.
At the other end, Gabor Kiraly had made a comfortable save from Deon Burton's early left footer but he had to show his reactions to block Steven MacLean's low drive with his feet after 12 minutes.
Morrison then found himself free in the box when Tom Soares picked him out with a clever pass after an earlier good tackle from Matt Lawrence. Morrison steadied himself but saw his shot blocked well by Steve Watson.
Moments later, Morrison was denied again when Turner made a good stop to turn his shot away from goal after a through-ball from Carl Fletcher.
Turner had to make a smart save in the 23rd minute, to turn Mark Hudson's shot from the edge of the area over the bar as Palace looked to take advantage of their early control.
Kiraly showed his sharpness to make a good low save and keep Glenn Whelan's driven free-kick out, after Palace had given away a foul on the very edge of the area.
The ongoing battle between Morrison and Turner continued and when he turned well in the 37th minute to fire a shot at goal, the big Scottish keeper was well placed to make a save to ensure the Owls went in level at the break.
There were no changes for either side at half time, but Palace started well again and Leon Cort tried his luck with a 35 yard shot which was again kept out by Turner.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Palace did make a change as Paul Ifill was introduced in place of Watson who had been suffering from an illness earlier in the week.
It was Wednesday who took the lead in the 57th minute though, when Chris Brunt's cross from the left was met with a powerful header by Burton. Kiraly got a hand to it, but couldn't quite stop it from hitting the back of the net.
They could have had a second when Burton swivelled well just six yards from goal but Palace had to be thankful that Kiraly was well placed to make a great save and clear the danger.
Ifill had livened things up for the Eagles though and he embarked on a twisting and turning run in the 72nd minute before delivering a fantastic cross into the middle which was just inches too high for Morrison to reach.
A flowing move in the 78th minute involved Ifill, Fletcher and Mark Kennedy before reaching Morrision in the box. He tried to swivel, but the ball was stuck under his feet and the chance went begging.
The Irish international didn't have to wait much longer though, as following a foul on Ifill by Peter Gilbert, Kennedy crossed with his left foot and Morrison was there to head home from inside the six yard box.
Palace sensed victory and were looking the more likely, but it was again the vistors who edged ahead in somewhat fortuitous fashion. A cross from Kenny Lunt caused confusion in the Palace box and when Cort's clearance looped up into the air, Kiraly was scrambling back to keep it out. It landed on the bar and bounced back out for Marcus Tudgay who volleyed home from six yards.
The Eagles tried in vain to draw themselves level, but it wasn't to be as the visitors stifled things with a double substitution to keep their points secure.
