Johnny Gavin 1928 - 2007
Posted on: Sat 22 Sep 2007
Johnny is best known for his two spells with Norwich (he is their leading goalscorer) and he also played for Tottenham and Watford, gaining 7 Eire caps along the way.
In May 1959 Palace manager George Smith brought the experienced barrel-chested outside right to Palace from Watford.
Palace was Johnny's last professional club and his pacy skill and guile were perefectly suited under Palace's next boss Arthur Rowe's push-and-run style that took the club out of the Fourth Division in 1960-61. In that season Johnny would probably been an ever-present but it seems he sustained an injury in a match against Millwall and missed the last seven games.
In the summer of 1961 Johnny joined Cambridge City, his Palace career totalling 68 games and 17 goals.
Our sympathies go to his family and relatives at this sad time for them.
